8-ball
8-ball is perhaps the most popular game for pool-playing enthusiasts. Below are the official UPA rules for 8-ball. However, we typically use these exceptions for a more beginner-friendly game:
- Foul shots (the cue ball doesn’t strike the intended ball or the shot isn’t made as called): The cue ball stays where it rests (i.e. it not placed behind the head string) and the next player shoots.
- Shots are called: Before your shot, indicate which ball will go into the pocket. For combination shots, indicate the sequence of balls that are struck. You may use your opponents ball(s) in a combination as long as you strike your own ball (i.e. solid vs. stripe) first.
- Scratch (where the cue ball falls into a pocket): The cue ball is placed anywhere behind the head string, no other balls are removed from the pocket, and the next player shoots.
9-ball
9-ball is a popular game as well. Click here for the official UPA rules for 9-ball.
